Sound Off: Are Christian Musicians Selling Out?

Recently, I heard the term “Jesus is my girlfriend music” and I wanted to post this topic for discussion. Is it selling out when a song’s lyrics could be written about a girl or about God and there is not way to distinguish which? Is it necessarily “right” or “wrong” to write about a significant other?

Post your response to this topic, we want to hear what you have to say!

Music Stir Makes Web Debut

ULTIMATE NEWS SITE PREMIERES FOR MUSIC FANS AND PROMOTERS

FREE TO VIEW, THRIVING COMMUNITY AND LOW COST PR

LINCOLN, Nebraska—June 29, 2007—Music Stir (www.musicstir.com) is the revolutionary new site where Christian music news thrives. Music Stir combines three products into one site—a revolutionary news service, the ability to easily and effectively release news to the masses and supporting community tools that will give new life to plain text news and features. The site is taking aim at a diverse audience, namely Christian music fans, industry reps and musicians who want to stay current on new releases, the latest trends and featured content. The site is free to browse and easy to navigate. Visitors can connect on a deeper level through the thriving Music Stir community with full fledged video and audio support. Music Stir allows anyone to “create a Stir” by submitting their content to the site with the ability to embed audio and video right into a Stir.

“This service was begging to be created,” says Chris McConnell, the entrepreneur behind Music Stir. “The Christian music industry is full of smart people that want to stay on top of things. Before, there was no central place where you could go to get up-to-the-minute Christian music information. Now you can get the latest news, reviews and features from your favorite magazines like CCM and Relevant and submit your own news all in one convenient place. As the industry continues to grow, effective communication will be a key ingredient to any successful business plan.”

Picture this: You post a news story embedded with related video that gets displayed on the homepage of a popular site. Visitors to the site like your story and want to remember it, so they bookmark it using embedded tools like Digg, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon or Reddit. Additionally, your news story gets syndicated via RSS through numerous other sites and is permanently available to search engines. That scenario is now a reality thanks to Music Stir. This is a new era of power and sophistication never seen before in the Christian music industry.

Music Stir is one of many remarkable services offered by McConnell Entertainment (www.cmcconnell.com).

Phonetic Composition All-Digital Record Deal

LINCOLN, NE – May 15, 2007. The Five Thousand announced plans today to sign industry veterans Phonetic Composition (Playdough and Freddie Bruno) to an all digital record deal. This breakthrough deal comes at a time when music consumers are purchasing an unprecedented amount of music online. While traditional record labels are busy turning out artists that are essentially radio-friendly clones, The Five Thousand embraces artist creativity and seeks to bring the fresh sound of the underground to the forefront. This approach naturally drew interest from Phonetic Composition, a group that almost defines individuality and self expression.

“This was the perfect time to create The Five Thousand. The concept of The Five Thousand is a controversial idea to many people in the industry because it is new and still untried,” says Chris McConnell, founder of McConnell Entertainment which operates Booking Pro, musicUP.org and Band With A Mission, the organization credited with discovering Rush Of Fools. “We chose to put a new spin on what a label is by being truly artist-friendly and making the music easily accessible to fans.”

The Five Thousand (T5K) takes it’s name from Luke 9:16 where Jesus feeds 5,000 people from 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes. Essentially, The Five Thousand translates to sharing. One of the goals of The Five Thousand is to provide a versatile content delivery system which benefits both artists and fans. There are many great independent artists that have “5 loaves and 2 fishes” but do not have the means to reach to masses. The Five Thousand seeks to provide listeners with a positive alternative to the dark and meaningless songs played on mainstream radio and the cookie-cutter formula used throughout much of today’s Christian music industry.

“We feel that there is still a lot of undeveloped potential for music as it relates to the internet. The technology already exists to quickly deliver content directly to the homes of consumers. People don’t want to drive to the store anymore to pick up the latest CD, they want to download it straight to their music player,” says Candice McConnell, President of Business Operations for The Five Thousand. “What we are doing is providing easy access to quality music in an environment that equally benefits the label and the artist.”
